Pakokku University was opened as Pakokku Regional College at the place of No(2) State High School, Pakokku on 23^rd May 1977. It was moved to the present location from the previous one in December, 1978. The responsibilities of Regional College were handed over by the Ministry of Education on April 1^st 1980.

Pakokku Regional College was reorganized as Pakokku College (two-year course) on November 30, 1981. Pakokku College was upgraded into Pakokku Degree College on 7^th July 1999. Again, Pakokku Degree College was upgraded into Pakokku University on 23^rd January 2001. Pakokku University is located on the right side of Myaing Road and on the north of the town. Original land area of Pakokku University is 53.59 acres. With the support of the authority concerned and the donation of the land owners, its area increases to 219.36 acres.
